Don Jazzy. Philanthropist by day, producer by night. The famed mogul of music and el patron of the Mavin music powerhouse. Don Jazzy also known as Michael Collins Ajereh unleashed his musical debut from way back when Afro music was just a flaming blip on world music radar. From playing drums in a church in London to leading the biggest music label in Africa, Don Jazzy has gone on to become a phenomenon in the minds of both mic rockers and civilians. Perhaps what is more distinct about the Mo’hits legend is his eye for fishing out amazing talents. Excellent singers! What i like to call “fire fire artists!”. This attribute to the Mavin Boss is seen in the musical
powerhouse; Mavin itself. Comprising of surreal artists such as Korede Bello, Ladipoe, Rema, Ruger, Ayra Starr and even the new Magixx, it has gone on to be a cartel of some sort. A cartel of elite music. This phenomenon is not one of new wonder. In fact, it is something that has been around since the 60s. This time, a feat not by Don Jazzy but by Berry Gordy of Detroit. Berry Gordy was Boss and legendary founder of the Motown records. A visionary, a symbol of Black excellence, he has helped mold some of the legends we hear of today. Legends like Diana Ross, The Jacksons, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and a host of others. Berry Gordy’s legacy turned out to be a legacy that spanned for decades of black music glory and even inspiring new generations. Afro music undoubtedly, has come a long way from Fela kuti and Egypt 80’. It has spread it‘s tentacles worldwide. Heck the galaxy hears it! With a host of springing artists day by day with new styles ranging from Afro pop to Afrotrap, the next generation of music we can say, is in safe hands. All thanks to men like Don Baba Jazzy and Berry Gordy. Gems the music world needs more than ever.
The Music industry, now more competitive and larger than ever thanks to the digital age, has created a sense of independency and yet doubt amongst up and coming artistes. But with men like Don Jazzy being on the ride since the early 2000’s, Artistes have been given a platform to express and manifest themselves. Don Jazzy, just like Berry Gordy has shaped and molded young minds artistically and morally. An effect lacking in parts of the world today.
To be honest, we all need a Don Jazzy in our lives.
Dearest Readers and music lovers, I’ll leave you here for now. My ink has gone to roost. Ciao.
